Acherontia Lachesis ~ also known as the Death’s-Head Hawkmoth ~ is quite the creature! It features a skull on it's thorax and is probably one of Mother Nature's creepier inventions. If you are a fan of Silence of the Lambs you will already know this moth. I do enjoy a bit of the dark and mysterious in my art and was inspired by this one for it's symbolism of death, transformation, and the afterlife.
My altered books are an expression of artistic creativity and a way to salvage what would be seen by many as garbage. Rather than tossing damaged books into the garbage, they instead find new purpose as vehicles for my vivid imagination and visions of a more inspiring, mysterious, and colorful world. A huge array of found objects guide the themes of these mixed media pieces and no two are ever alike. I hope you enjoy the magical and imaginative spaces of these creations!
This particular piece has been created from an old crumbling book that was destined for the landfill, a large foam core for the moth, and a bit of glitter to keep things on the lighter side. It's meant for a special indoor space with minimal dust and no direct sun exposure. The book itself measures approximately 8" by 5" and is about 2" high and is attached to a base book that measures 9" x 10".
